Ask eightplustwo.com – bitterness?

You know, I get a *ton* of emails from my readers every day. Sometimes its a “hey nice post today,” other times its a “why don’t you go eff yourself,” and occasionally there’s a legitimate question thrown in there. That got me to thinking maybe I should do a new feature on this interweb log thing. I introduce to you, loyal fans, the new feature:

Ask eightplustwo.com

Today’s email covers what is perhaps one of the most commonly asked question that I receive, which is why I thought it only appropriate to kick of this happy hour at Shenanigans with.

Dear eightplustwo,
You blog is gnarly. I’ve got a question for you though: what’s up with that Shovel dude? He seems awfully bitter.

Dear Jonny B,
This is an excellent question and one I get asked quite frequently. First of all, let’s talk about bitterness. People often interchange sour and bitter with the notion that they are the same, however this is quite incorrect. There are indeed nuances that serrate sour from bitter and it sometimes takes a very discernable pallet to tell the difference. The easiest way to distinguish them is that sour makes your cheeks pucker, whereas bitter can hit the back of the tongue with a unique flavor (coincidentally, your mom says the same about me). In terms of cycling it is equivalent to the difference between a rider being fast and quick (if you don’t know the difference, there’s a good chance that you’re neither).

Back to the Shovel–to say that he is very bitter really doesn’t adequately convey just how bitter he is. To remedy this, I have put together the following diagram. Hope this helps (click for full size scale):

Cheers,
